Albert Martinez

September 22, 2022

Shortly after starting his college career, Albert Martinez realized continuing the higher education route was going to be too expensive. Once he heard about Job Corps from a family friend, he couldn’t let the opportunity pass him by.

Albert enrolled in the Carpentry program at Gary Job Corps in Texas with the dream of becoming a carpenter.

“The first day on campus was a new beginning for me. I found new opportunities, friends and mentors.”

Most of Albert’s Job Corps experience took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the adjustments to campus life and his curriculum, Albert found every opportunity to learn and grow as a carpenter.

“In work-based learning, we helped with any and all campus projects. I gained self-confidence and skills, from building to cleaning, to decorating. The experience was great. I enjoyed it even more than class!”

After graduating, Albert landed a job with Turner Construction, earning $17 per hour as a gatekeeper. He plans to join a carpentry union and eventually train to become an architect.

“I like art, especially drawing. Since attending Job Corps and working, I realize I love reading plans and making projects come to life. I like the idea of knowing exactly what I’m building. What can I change and adapt to create great design?”

His advice for those considering Job Corps?

“Focus on improving yourself. Focus on you and find as many ways as you can to gain knowledge and grow.”
