Amanda Short knew she would not be able to raise her three children and give them a better life if she did not make a change. She learned about the Job Corps program through Head Start, her 4-year-old daughter’s preschool, and decided to contact the staff at Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center.
While at Job Corps, Amanda earned her high school diploma in June 2018 and took CNA classes through a partnership with Big Sandy Community & Technical College. She will be taking her state test in the upcoming months.
Amanda has another reason to celebrate, since she has been offered a job as a CNA at Mountain Manor Nursing Home in Paintsville, Ky. She is also enrolled in the phlebotomy program at Big Sandy Community & Technical College.
“If it wasn’t for the Job Corps program, and the support and encouragement of the staff at Perkins, I would not have had the courage to do this,” Amanda said. “I can now create a better life for my three children. Job Corps gave me a new start, and I want to thank them for everything.”
