Amanda Umbrello always knew she wanted to do something that would help others, but her resources were limited.
“When I was a child, I was adopted into a very large family, so money was tight,” Amanda said. “I knew I would have to be independent and work hard to achieve my goals.”
During her high school years, enrolled in medical terminology, anatomy, and basic medical classes. After graduating, she enrolled in pre-nursing classes at Thomas Nelson Community College.
But with money being tight and so much on her plate, it wasn’t long before she withdrew from college. Amanda became a waitress and lived paycheck to paycheck.
“I started feeling hopeless,” she said. “I didn’t see a way out of my situation until I saw an ad for Job Corps.”
During her time at the Blue Ridge Job Corps Center, Amanda earned her Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy and Patient Care Technician certifications. She was also an active member of the Student Government Association, an opportunity that allowed her to get involved in the community and be a helpful resource to her classmates.
Amanda is now a medical assistant at Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group (TPMG) Family Practice in Hampton Roads, Virginia. She plans to continue her education and achieve her dream of becoming a registered nurse.
