When Herbert Crump had to leave high school in the 10th grade and didn’t know what his next step would be, Job Corps gave him a new path. While living with his grandmother and great-grandmother, he became close with his great-grandmother’s homemaker, whose son attended Job Corps. She encouraged him to take this opportunity for himself.
Herbert scored high on the academic test when applying to Job Corps and was placed in the advanced GED classes. Within his first 6 months at Glenmont Job Corps, Herbert passed his GED exam and started training in office administration. Also during his time at Job Corps, he interned at a law firm in Albany, N.Y., where he was able to apply the office administration skills that he learned on center.
Herbert graduated from Glenmont in 1987, spent some time in the military, and then was hired at a law firm in New York. He brought his Job Corps office assistant skills to the job.
Herbert then began a journey of higher education. He earned his associate degree from Clinton Junior College in South Carolina, his bachelor’s degree from Livingstone College (N.C.) and his master’s degree from Winthrop University (S.C.). Now, he is pursuing his Ph.D. and has been a pastor of Freedom Temple Ministries for the past 18 years.
Looking back, Herbert credits Job Corps with putting him on this path.
“Job Corps is the catalyst of positive change in your life. Give it a chance and you won’t regret your decision.”
