At the time, 20-year-old waiter Chuck Harp was missing a key piece in his life: stability. He knew that he wanted and needed it, but he wasn’t sure how to get it. After speaking with a family member, Chuck learned that, at Job Corps, he could train in an industry that would help prepare him to find the job, financial, and life stability he had been looking for.
Interested in construction and wanting to work with his hands, Chuck entered into the Plumbing training area at Sierra Nevada Job Corps. While he was there, he earned his high school diploma, started saving money by working at a local grocery store, and put in the hard work to learn everything he could about his training area to graduate on time.
“You can find success at Job Corps if you stick to the program. Just stick to the script and remember why you’re there,” Chuck said. “If you do that, then you’ll be good.”
Chuck’s hard work and perseverance paid off. He was hired straight out of Job Corps after a local plumbing company came to his Job Corps class looking to hire graduating students. Since then, Chuck has been working in the industry for over 25 years. He is currently a foreman and has found not only stability, but incredible success.
Chuck’s primary motivation behind completing Job Corps was to provide for his then girlfriend, now wife, and the family they wanted to build together. And because of his training at Job Corps, Chuck has been able to accomplish just that. His wife, Jen, says that Job Corps helped the young man she knew find a trade that he loved and one that has provided very well for their family over the years.
“Job Corps is great. You can see the outcome of going there, you can learn a trade and use it,” Chuck said. “You can buy a house; you can feed your family. I wouldn’t have gotten here without Job Corps.”
