Cia-Simone Newell was ready for a change. On March 5, 2019, she arrived at the Cleveland Job Corps Center to study Building Construction Technology. She had previously graduated from Bedford High School and was excited to pursue additional education. Cia-Simone was ready to train hard and wasted no time earning credentials in Building Construction Technology, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Forklift.
“I enrolled in the Cleveland Job Corps Center to get a certification in a trade and do something with my life. I had too much free time on my hands and was not being productive.”
Cia-Simone had significant support from several of her mentors and Job Corps staff. Mike Yeager, Building Construction Technology instructor; Neal Randol, deputy center director; Kimberly Jordan, counselor; Yolanda Ooten, residential supervisor; and Sharon Patterson, social development director, guided Cia-Simone and knew she could achieve success.
A few students, along with the Job Corps staff, helped mentor Cia-Simone along the way. The wellness department also supported Cia-Simone and helped her overcome challenges that kept her from succeeding in life.
On Feb. 14, 2020, Cia-Simone, 21 years old at the time, completed her Building Construction Technology training at Cleveland Job Corps. She then gained employment at Hitchcock Center for Women as a facility maintenance worker.
“If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed, because the vision pulls you.”
