When Cristian Aquino arrived at the Iroquois Job Corps Center in November 2019, he didn’t know what the next year had in store for the world. All the setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic—including having to finish his career training from home—wouldn’t stop him from completing the program, though.
Cristian enrolled in the Carpentry training area and stood out as a diligent student who worked hard and persevered to complete the program. He was an active participant in his training area and a role model to his peers, even assisting other pre-apprentice Carpentry students when they needed help.
While he progressed through Job Corps, Cristian earned several credentials: forklift operator, green building awareness, scaffold user and scaffold safety. He also completed the OSHA 30-hour construction course. When the pandemic forced Job Corps students home, Cristian’s work ethic didn’t waver. In December 2020, he successfully completed the Carpentry pre-apprentice training program.
Cristian is now a part of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in New York City. As a professional, he uses the skills he learned at Job Corps every day and continues to model the values that Job Corps seeks to impart in its students. All his success is thanks to his hardworking spirit—and to Job Corps for providing him the opportunity to learn.
