“Before Job Corps, interacting with others was a challenge. Now, it’s one of my favorite parts of my job.”
Job Corps not only gave Deandre Gwynn the technical skills for his career but helped him gain the interpersonal skills and professionalism that he uses every day.
Deandre initially went to college as his “plan A,” he but soon learned it wasn’t the right fit for him. He understood the importance of education and knew he would need some form of specialized training to succeed in the future. That’s when Deandre discovered Job Corps.
Deandre graduated from Excelsior Springs Job Corps in February 2020, completing his training in facilities maintenance. Deandre also became certified in HVAC, in addition to obtaining several other credentials.
“Education is key. Don’t take opportunities for granted, and when opportunities arrive, you’ve got to put the work in to achieve and excel 110 percent.”
After Job Corps, Deandre secured a job as a maintenance technician at the Community Blood Center in Kansas City. Deandre says his technical training more than prepared him for any challenges he may be faced with in his career.
