When Fiona Erskine walked across the stage to receive her associate degree at Virginia Highlands Community College’s commencement in June 2019, she was celebrating not only her recent achievement, but her persistence to overcome any obstacle that stood in her way. Her journey to this moment began with Job Corps, where Fiona dedicated many hours to her classes and community service, assisting with blood drives and the Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic.
After completing both the Medical Office Support and Clinical Medical Assistant career technical programs at Blue Ridge Job Corps Center, Fiona applied to the Radiography Program at Virginia Highlands Community College as a part of Blue Ridge Job Corps’ Advanced Career Training (ACT) Program. Over the course of her enrollment, Fiona made both the Merit List and President’s List.
Fiona recently accepted a job as an X-ray technician at the University of Virginia, making $21.10 per hour. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in interventional radiology at the University of Virginia.
“I encourage anyone looking for a new path to consider Job Corps,” Fiona recommended. “The free opportunities there can give you such a jumpstart to a great career.”
