When
Frederica Okine moved from Ghana to the United States, she brought with her a passion for helping others and a desire to go into the medical field. Her grandmother told her about Job Corps, and after researching it online, she knew it was the place she needed to be.
“I researched Job Corps and learned about all the benefits I could get. They offered me an opportunity no one else would. I saw it, and I took advantage of it.”
Frederica enrolled in the Certified Nurse Assistant program at Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center. This program would ultimately allow her to make a difference in other people’s lives.
Her Job Corps experience exceeded her expectations. One of the major aspects that stood out for Frederica about Job Corps was the willingness of the teachers to help her throughout her training and to help her find a job.
“I was new to the country, and the teachers were very friendly and helped me every step of the way.”
Frederica successfully completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program and secured a job. She is now a CNA at Armour Oaks Senior Living Community in Kansas City, Mo.
Frederica was inspired to continue her medical training and help others along the way. She wants to become a registered nurse and plans to enroll at Metropolitan Community College – Penn Valley.
