Inspired by her hardworking and supportive parents to reach her full potential, Julia Vazquez received her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification from Smyth County Career & Technology Center in May 2019. That journey began with Job Corps.
After joining Blue Ridge Job Corps in September 2016, Julia completed both the Nursing Assistant and Medical Assistant career training programs in addition to obtaining First Aid, CPR, ServSafe, Health Information and Portability, and National Career Readiness certifications.
“When I learned that Job Corps could provide me a pathway to a career as an LPN absolutely free, I jumped on it,” Julia said.
Through a partnership with Smyth County Career & Technology Center, Blue Ridge Job Corps Center gave her the opportunity to enroll in a 2-year License Practical Nurse (LPN) Advanced Training program. She did an excellent job juggling school and work, while still having some of the highest grades in her class.
Now, Julia works as a psychiatric care technician at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute. She aspires to take the next step in her career journey and is planning to enroll in college to become a registered nurse.
