Khalil Perry always had a drive to succeed and credits his family for his can-do attitude.
His journey with Job Corps began in 2014 at Turner Job Corps Center in Georgia. He enrolled in the Electrical program but with his eyes set on eventually becoming an overhead lineman.
After graduating, Khalil realized he wanted to learn more and re-enrolled in the Plumbing program at Brunswick Job Corps Center. While at Brunswick, Khalil worked at a hardware store, helping customers find parts they needed for plumbing and other construction projects. He worked hard throughout his career training and work-based learning, then decided to push himself even further by enrolling in Advanced Overhead Lineman training at Gary Job Corps Center.
With previous training and work-based learning under his belt, Khalil was a natural and easily excelled.
In April 2021, Khalil graduated with Advanced Electrical training, along with climbing rescue, bucket and digger truck operations, and overhead lineman credentials. He is especially thankful for his instructor, Adam Cantu, for helping him every step of the way to achieving his goals.
“Job Corps far exceeded my expectations. It was the most fun I ever had.”
Right after graduating from Job Corps, Khalil obtained a job with Colorado Materials as a maintenance technician, bought his own car and now works for KWells Towers, building 5G networks. Down the line, Khalil aims to someday own his own tile company.
“Before you even start the program, think about what you want to do and the type of career you want to have. Think about your hobbies and go from there. When it comes to a career, if you don’t like it, you won’t give it your all. When you like your job, you will push yourself to be your best.”
