After graduating from high school, Mariah worked at Walmart. She has a passion for learning and was interested in furthering her education. When she learned Job Corps offered medical programs, she was eager to start her journey.
Mariah began training in the Certified Nurse Assistant training area but switched to Clinical Medical Assistant because she thought it would be a better fit.
“I wanted something different. I wanted to work with the doctor and learn more about the medical field.”
Mariah was also a Career Preparation Program ambassador on campus. She was a resource for students: showing them around campus, telling them about the rules and preparing them for life at Job Corps. Mariah loved being part of the program. It helped her open up to others, experience different perspectives and find friends.
“I’m not very open. At first, I mainly stayed in my room playing video games, but the program actually got me to find new people to hang out with and enjoy my time on center.”
Mariah’s goal is to specialize in the neurology and pathology medical fields. She currently works in the medical department for the prison system in Texas.
“It’s prepared me a lot because I work in the prison. I’m using every certification I received. My job is excited to use me anywhere they can. I’m grateful that I’m able to learn so much and happy that I can apply the skills I learned at Job Corps.”
Her advice for students?
“Get out of your comfort zone. Try to be a part of extracurriculars to meet new people.”
