Mohamed Osman Mohamed

August 7, 2018

Mohamed Osman Mohamed, a Somali refugee, was forced to leave his country in 2010. He left behind family and friends in Somalia for a life in America that would soon bring opportunities he never thought he would have.

Because of Job Corps and the opportunities that it gave him, Mohamed now works as a company investor relations analyst at Eli Lilly in Indiana. His success has been a direct reflection of his hard work and dedication. Mohamed now reflects on his past, and is thankful for his Job Corps journey that has led him to his career at Eli Lilly.

With the help of a translator, Mohamed began the Business Administration program at the Atterbury Job Corps Center in 2011. Mohamed graduated from Job Corps at the end of 2012 and was chosen to go to community college to take general education classes for a year.

Mohamed knew it was important to take advantage of the opportunities he was given by Job Corps, so he spent his days and nights in the library studying. “I was very excited and exhilarated to make something of myself, but knew I had to work hard. I knew that I could not help anyone if I could not help myself first,” Mohamed said.

He graduated in the summer of 2013 from community college and went on to study public affairs and economics at Indiana University. After multiple internships in D.C., including one with the U.S. Treasury Department, and studying abroad in London, Mohamed graduated with distinction from the University of Indiana in 2017.

His training at Job Corps put him on a lifelong track for success, and he hasn’t looked back since.

“Job Corps was my first steppingstone. It taught me to be independent and to operate with integrity and self-respect wherever I go.”
