Quinton Neloms was a student at Bethune Cookman College when his financial situation drastically changed. His grandmother, who was assisting him with school, passed away, and Quinton spiraled down a dangerous path of drugs and crime. After losing his job and apartment, he decided to enroll in Job Corps to turn his life around.
While at the Jacksonville Job Corps Center, Quinton trained in the Electrical field and continued on to the Advanced Training program. He also served as the SGA vice president during his time at the center.
“Since the moment I walked into the doors of Job Corps, my life has never been the same,” Quinton said. “I learned the value of the program and never looked back. I learned discipline and decided to take ownership of my behavior and future.”
After Job Corps, Quinton began his career as a field survey tech at Florida Power & Light. He was later promoted to design specialist. During Hurricane Irma, he supervised 20–50 linemen to help restore power to the area. He was then hired by engineering firm Ferreira Power Group as a design specialist, making $150,000 a year.
“I am the only person at my firm who does not have a college degree,” Quinton said. “Job Corps prepared me well.”
