After graduating from Harvey High School, Shakia Smith began working in a factory as a molding operator. Feeling that she was in a dead-end job with no future, Shakia decided Job Corps would be her best option for success.
During her enrollment, Shakia trained as a nurse assistant and was involved in campus activities. She served as president of her dorm, was a member of the cooking club, and often volunteered in the Recreation Department. Shakia completed her training in May 2019, and says she’s thankful to her instructor for motivating her and helping her stay on track. In her words: “It was truly needed and valued during my journey.”
With the assistance of her work-based learning coordinator, Shakia secured employment at Wickliffe Country Place as a state-tested nursing assistant. She plans to continue her education and become a nurse practitioner.
“You can really do anything you want to if you put your mind to it and work hard at it.”
