Talhah Shahid

January 18, 2022

A strong work ethic was not new to Talhah Shahid. Before joining Job Corps, he worked as a dishwasher, mover, warehouse hand and janitor, but never felt optimistic about his future professional growth.

He worked long hours with low pay, never seeing a high school diploma or career in sight for himself. Unable to save money and feeling determined to overcome generational poverty, Talhah knew something had to change.

Starting at Job Corps, Talhah expected to at least finish high school, but never knew how far his training would take him. Talhah not only earned his high school diploma, but learned the fundamentals of a trade he loves, problem-solving and financial skills, and the maturity he needed to thrive.

Talhah currently earns $59.83 per hour as a flatbed driver for Swift Transportation and is finally able to save for retirement and care for his family.

“Job Corps is a chance at redemption, a rare opportunity to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and decide to make something of yourself, regardless of social standing or where you came from.”

While at Turner Job Corps Center, Talhah earned his diploma and college credits, completed his training, and gained several industry-recognized credentials, such as forklift certification, green awareness and hands-on experience using heavy equipment machinery. He is especially grateful for the Job Corps staff and instructors who helped him achieve more than he could ever imagine.

His mentors on campus, including his instructors and residential advisor, helped Talhah learn the skills he needed for his career; but they also taught him about being financially responsible, different ways to approach and solve problems, and personal growth.

“I am in a career that is fulfilling, and it all started with Job Corps.”
