Tayler Goins grew up in Colonial Heights, Va., as the eldest of four siblings. After graduating from high school, she decided to work as a cashier at Food Lion and CVS instead of pursuing higher education.
“I was being irresponsible, and the time came that I had to make a choice to better my life—that choice was Job Corps.”
Both Tayler’s uncle and cousin studied health care during their time at Job Corps, and she decided to follow in their footsteps. Tayler enrolled in the Certified Medical assistant training area at Blue Ridge Job Corps in June 2018. When she graduated in August 2019, Tayler was a certified medical assistant and had earned her certification in phlebotomy. She honed her skills during her internship at Smyth County Family Physicians and said that her time there helped prepare her for her career.
Tayler began her first full-time job as a clinical medical assistant in December 2019, at Southside Physician Network ENT and Allergy in Colonial Heights, Va. She hopes to pursue her Registered Nurse degree to further her career in the medical field.
Tayler is thankful for the opportunities that Blue Ridge Job Corps provided her and recommends future students to focus on their goals. “You will make a lot of friends in Job Corps, but always remember that your success is the most important thing,” Tayler advised.
