In 2015, Tevin Pierson enrolled in the Cleveland Job Corps Center’s carpentry program. “This was an opportunity for me to get help with career development because I was not experiencing any growth on my own,” Tevin explained. He entered the program with a high school diploma. Before coming to Cleveland Job Corps, Tevin was working at Dave’s Supermarket and taking classes at Cuyahoga Community College.
During his enrollment, Tevin obtained his NCCER Core Curriculum, U
BC Pre-Apprentice Certificate, OSHA 10, Scaffold Safety, Green Awareness, Vinyl Siding, and HILTI Powder Actuated Tools certifications. He served as a dorm leader and participated in boxing and other extracurricular activities. He also helped build and install Little Free Libraries throughout Cleveland to promote literacy. “I appreciated how honest and upfront my instructors were about everything I needed to do to be successful,” Tevin stated. “They motivated me and taught me good work ethics and how to work in a construction/manufacturing work environment.”
After graduating from Cleveland Job Corps, Tevin was hired at Hose Masters as a prepper, making $13.50 an hour. “Never give up despite any hurdles you may encounter. The opportunities and training that Job Corps provides are worth the effort,” Tevin said.
